The Burning (1981) - Incredible Horror Movie Facts

The Burning (1981 – Directed by Tony Maylam)

The Burning was the first feature film for future film and TV stars Fisher Stevens (Short Circuit), Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) and Holly Hunter (The Piano).

The music score is by keyboard legend Rick Wakemen of the progressive rock band Yes.

The film’s boogeyman, Cropsy, is based on a real upstate New York urban legend called ‘Cropsey’ – a campfire horror story that became popular in American Summer Camps in the 60’s and 70’s. He was said to be an escaped mental patient who lived in an abandoned lunatic asylum in Willowbrook. Sometimes it was said he had a hook for a hand whilst others describes him as wielding an axe, depending on who was telling the story. Chillingly in 1988 a man called Andre Rand was arrested in Willowbrook for murdering twelve-year-old Jennifer Schweiger. Rand was also linked to a number of other disappearances of young children from the area and has been successfully convicted of kidnapping seven-year-old Holly Ann Hughes, whose body was never found. Maybe Cropsy was real all along?
